Science Courses

PHYSICAL SCIENCE - Grade 9.  Required for graduation.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.

GENERAL SCIENCE - Grade 9.  Required for graduation.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.

LIFE SCIENCE - Grade 9.  Required for graduation.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit

*COLLEGE PREP BIOLOGY - Grade 10 - 12.  This is a college preparatory course that will explore the central themes of life science.  Prerequisite: Life Science.  2 hour block - 1 semester - 1 credit.

ENVIRONMENTAL BIOLOGY - Grade 10  - 12.  A general biology course that will satisfy the life science graduation requirement for non college prep students.  2 hour block - 1 semester - 1 credit.

*ANATOMY / PHYSIOLOGY - Grade 11 - 12.  This course is intended for students wishing to pursue a program of study in allied health, medicine or biology at a four year school.  Dissections of sheep organs will be done to enrich the class.  2 hour block - 1 semester - 1 credit.

BOTANY - Grade 10 - 12.  Students will explore concepts relating to the classification of plants, plant structure, and plant growth and development.  Prerequisite:  Life Science.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.

ZOOLOGY - Grade 11 - 12.  Zoology is the comparative and correlative study of the functional body systems among animal organisms.  Students will learn how animals are named, classified, organized and related.  The study will be based on anatomical observations, dissections and evolutionary relationships.  Prerequisite:  "A of B" in Biology or a "A" in Environmental Biology or permission of instructor.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.

APPLIED ZOOLOGY - Grade 11 - 12.  this course is for students that don't meet the prerequisite for Zoology yet want to explore how animals are named, classified, organized, and related.  Dissections will be a part of this class.  l observations, dissections and evolutionary relationships.  Prerequisite:  Passing grade in Biology of Environmental Biology.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.

*CHEMISTRY I - Grade 10 - 12.  A college preparatory laboratory-based chemistry course intended to introduce students to the world of chemistry.  Students planning to further their education at an institute of higher learning should pair this course with Chemistry II.  2 hour block - 1 seimester - 1 credit.

*CHEMISTRY II - Grade 11 - 12.  This curse is a continuation of Chemistry I and will prepare students for a freshman level college chemistry class.  This course can be taken for college credit.  See instructor for details.  2 hour block - 1 semester - 1 credit.

*ORGANIC CHEMISTRY - Grade 10 - 12.  This course is for students entering a career in the medical field  or a chemistry and involves the comprehensive study of carbon.  1 hour block - one trimester - ½ credit.

*NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY - Grade 10 - 12.  This course is for any student wanting a general knowledge of nuclear chemistry and its controversial uses.  Chemistry I is strongly recommended prior to taking this course.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.

CONSUMER CHEMISTRY - Grade 11 - 12.  This course is for non college prep students.  The chemical properties of various consumer products will be studied.  Prerequisite:  Physical Science and general Science.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.

GENERAL SCIENCE II - Grade 11 - 12.  this course is for students who have yet to pass the science portion of the OGT.  Prerequisite:  Physical Science I.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.

*PHYSICS I - Grade 10-12.  This course will take problem solving approach to physics.  Students should pose a strong math background.  Prerequisite:  Geometry and Physical Science2 hour block - 1 semester - 1 credit.

*PHYSICS II - Grade 11-12.  A continuation of Physics I.  Prerequisite:  Physics I.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½  credit.
