Business Courses

(Students interested in the marketing education program should let their counselor know of their interest.)


GENERAL BUSINESS - Grade 10.  This is an introductory course to general business principles required for all sophomores.   Students will be introduced to business organizations, social responsibility, entrepreneurship & small business, management & leadership, marketing, business & technology, instructional business, banking & financial services and are required to complete career planning & development activities using the Kuder career Planning System.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit

ACCOUNTING I - Grades 10 - 12.  This course is designed to teach the fundamental principles of accounting.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit

ACCOUNTING II - Grades 11 - 12.  This course is a combination of Accounting I and is a completion of the accounting cycle.  Prerequisite for this course is completion of Accounting I with a grade of C or better or permission of the instructor.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.

BUSINESS CONSUMER MATH - Grades 10 - 12.  In this class students will learn computation and mathematical skills used to solve business and consumer related problems.  Students will analyze and interpret data and apply sound decision making skills to better their own economic futures or those of their employers.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.

BUSINESS ECONOMICS - Grade 10.  In Business Economics, a project-based course, students expand their understanding that businesses are influenced by external factors that are often beyond their control.  Consumer spending, government policies, economic conditions, legal issues, and global competition are addressed through practical, current applications to everyday societal and business life.  Decision matrices are introduced, and the importance and costs of quality are stressed.  Students develop their knowledge and skills in such areas as economics, entrepreneurship, operations, and professional development.  Throughout the course, students will be presented with current economic problems for which they are asked to determine solutions, often through the application of decision matrices.  Prerequisite:  Principles of Business.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.

BUSINESS LEADERSHIP- Grade 9.  Leadership, a project-based leadership course, develops students understanding and skills in such areas as communication skills, emotional intelligence, operations, and professional development.  Students acquire an understanding and appreciation of the need for leadership skills.  To encourage immediate implementation of leadership skills, Leadership utilizes an on-going service-learning project for course delivery and reinforcement.  The course content is sequenced for students to identify, plan, implement, and evaluate a service-learning project based on the needs of their community/school.  Throughout the course, students are presented problem-solving situations for which they must apply academic and critical-thinking skills.  Formal reflection is an on-going component of the course.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.

MARKETING EDUCATION I - Grades 11 - 12.  Introductory course including the very basic concepts marketing and business functions.  Recommended but not required:  General Business.  2 hour block - 1 semester - 1 credit.

MARKETING EDUCATION II - Grade 12.  This course is a continuation of Marketing Education I.  Prerequisite:  Marketing Education.  2 hour block - 1 semester - 1 credit.

MARKETING EDUCATION INTERNSHIP - Grade 12.  Students will be placed with a local business, outside of the school building.  Students are responsible for their own transportation.  Students can choose to complete the hourly requirements outside of the school day.  Prerequisite:  Marketing I.  2 hour block - 1 semester - 1 credit.

PERSONAL / BUSINESS LAW I  - Grades 10 - 12.  Recommended for all Marketing students.  A study of personal and business law as it affects society as a whole, and legal rights and responsibilities of citizens, minors and consumers.  Students take a field trip to Common Pleas Court.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.

PERSONAL / BUSINESS LAW II  - Grades 11 - 12.  A continuation of Business Law I concentrating on the elements of a contract.  Prerequisite:  Business Law I.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.

PRINCIPLES OF BUSINESS  - Grade 10.  Principles of Business, a project-based business course, develops student understanding and skills in such areas as business law, economics, financial analysis, human resources management, information management, marketing, operations, and strategic management.  Through the use of three projects, students acquire an understanding and appreciation of the business world.  They develop a business analysis report, conduct an environmental scan of the local business community, and investigate business activities. Current technology will be used to acquire information and to complete projects.  Throughout the course, students are presented problem-solving situations for which they must apply academic and critical-thinking skills.  Formal reflection is an on-going component of the course.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit

WEALTH MANAGEMENT  - Grade 9.  This project-based financial literacy and investment course develops student understanding and skills in such areas as personal finance, types of investment, the stock market, and stock valuation.  Students acquire an understanding and appreciation of the need for personal financial management and investing.  To encourage immediate implementation of financial literacy and investment skills, Wealth Management utilizes an on-going investment  project for course delivery and reinforcement.  The course content is sequenced for students to develop a diversified, balanced investment portfolio based both on their interest in products and companies and on fundamental analysis.  Throughout the course, students are presented problem-solving situations for which they must apply academic and critical-thinking skills.  Students taking this course as a freshman will not be  required to take General Business.  1 hour block - 1 semester - ½ credit.
