7th Grade 10th Period TEAM activities

7th Grade 10th Period TEAM activities
As a young girl, Malala Yousafzai defied the Taliban in Pakistan and demanded that girls be allowed to receive an education. She was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in 2012, but survived. She was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2013. In 2014, she was nominated again and won, becoming the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
We showed students this link.  Clicking through the slides as we had student volunteers read each slide that told Malala's story. We then discussed how when something is given freely to you it becomes less desirable and that is the sad state of affairs when it comes to a lot of students in America. They would happily give up going to school. Mrs. Vernon shared her trip to a Nabiba school in Africa and the sacrifices those family's made so their children could go to school because education is neither free nor easy to come by. There are many children in other countries who would give up their families and homeland and everything they know to get the education so many of our children take for granted. We explored the concept of respecting those who are giving them the precious gift that is education. Next week we will share the clip of Malala on the Ellen show.

We also discussed how some of our TEAM members would like to research other inspiring role models and do projects about what they learned. They would then like to share this with other TEAMS.

Mrs. Vernon showed kid president pep talk for teachers and students on YouTube today 10th period. It opened up a lot of good class discussion and the kids seemed to enjoy it even if a few had already seen it.
